Video card for Gamer

1. Nvidia GeForce GTX 280

Only a few months after releasing the GeForce 9800, Nvidia entered a new era by launching the GTX 280 and 260. The 280 is a true graphics powerhouse with some 1.4 billion transistors, leading the way in single GPU game performance at the moment. The 280 is relatively costly to produce, so although the price has dropped almost 30 percent since the cards first arrived, they're still big bucks.

2. Nvidia GeForce 9800 GX2

The 9800 GX2 is a dual GPU solution, effectively giving you an SLI system in a single convenient package. In this case 2 PCBs are used, rather than trying to get both GPUs and 1 GB of memory onto one board. It's a very large card that covers 2 slots, but at current prices it's cheaper and easier than buying two 9800 GTXs for use in an SLI setup. It's a bit less expensive than the GTX 280 and performs a little better in some cases, so it's worth a look.

3. ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2

Another one of ATI's dual GPU cards, this time with two HD 4870 graphics processors and a whopping 2 GB of memory onboard. It's a close race between the HD 4870 X2, the GeForce 9800 GX2, and the GeForce GTX 280 for the top spot in performance, with each showing strengths in certain games. This card definitely puts out some impressive framerates. Of course, like other dual GPU cards, they tend to consume a lot of power, produce a lot of heat, and cost a small fortune, especially that last part for the HD 4870 X2.
